Just a short stroll from the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey, Jars Meze brings the warmth and generosity of a Greek family table to Northumberland Place.
Lunch on a sunny afternoon felt entirely fitting for a restaurant inspired by the Greek tradition of meze: small plates, shared dishes and plenty of conversation. From the moment we arrived, there was an easy, relaxed atmosphere. The dining room felt busy without being rushed, and the service struck that lovely balance between attentive and unhurried.

According to the family behind the restaurant, Jars Meze is “more than just a restaurant, it’s a piece of Greece in Bath.” Recipes have been passed down through generations, and the menu is built around the idea of sharing food, stories and time together. Imported Greek olive oil and carefully chosen ingredients help keep the dishes close to their roots. Bottled Olive Oil, Vinegar and Salt are readily available on each table.
We were promptly seated, and not long after, our orders were taken. We were not entirely sure whether we had ordered enough, but the waitress reassured us that two meze dishes, two mains and a side of pitta bread would be plenty. She was right.

Greek Meze Made for Sharing
Greek meze works best when you order a few dishes and let the table gradually fill.
The Cold Meze
We started with two traditional cold meze.
The Politiki Melitzanosalata arrived first: smoked aubergine blended with olive oil, garlic, peppers and Greek spices. Smooth and deeply savoury, it had a gentle smokiness and plenty of garlic without becoming overpowering. Spread onto warm bread, it was simple and delicious.

Next came the Dolmades, stuffed vine leaves filled with rice and herbs and finished with a fresh lemon sauce. These were particularly good. The vine leaves were tender, the filling was light and fragrant, and the lemon added just enough brightness to lift the dish.
Both are staples of the menu and perfect examples of the sort of food Jars Meze does best: honest, traditional and full of flavour.

Then came the hot dishes. It didn’t take long for all the dishes to be served. We asked for a side of Pitta bread to go with our dishes.
The Hot Meze
Tigania from Macedonia
The Tigania from Macedonia was one of the highlights of the meal. Marinated pork pieces were cooked with caramelised onions, peppers, herbs and fresh thyme.
The pork was tender and full of flavour, while the onions added a lovely sweetness that balanced the herbs and seasoning. It felt rustic and comforting in the best way, the sort of dish that would sit proudly in the middle of a family table.
The aroma of the thyme came through clearly, giving the dish a lovely aroma and a little extra depth.

Moschari sto Fourno
Our other hot dish was the Moschari sto Fourno: slow-cooked beef chunks with aubergines and feta.
This was rich, hearty and beautifully cooked. The beef was soft enough to cut with a fork, while the aubergine had almost melted into the sauce. Crumbled feta on top added a salty, creamy finish that brought everything together.
If the pork dish felt rustic and homely, this one felt slower, richer and more indulgent. It was exactly the sort of dish you hope to find in a family-run Greek restaurant.

A portion of freshly baked flatbread came with the dishes, perfect for swiping through the sauces, dipping into the meze and wrapping around the tender meat.

A Traditional Greek Restaurant in Bath
Part of what makes Jars Meze stand out is that it does not feel like a polished chain interpretation of Greek food. It feels personal. The interior is homely with framed paintings, pottery, random paraphernalia and potted plants. The hanging lamps were also DIY endeavours, made from up cycled jars, wood cuts, jute and LED filament light bulbs.
The menu encourages you to order a little of everything and share it around the table. There are plenty of classic Greek dishes beyond the ones we tried, from moussaka and kleftiko to spanakopita, gyros and baklava. Signature dishes such as Kleftiko from Ioannina and Stifado from Corfu reflect the family’s roots and recipes passed down through generations.

The restaurant has earned a strong following in Bath, with more than 1,400 reviews and a reputation as one of the city’s favourite Greek restaurants.
What we would order again
If we returned, the Dolmades would be an easy repeat order. The lemon sauce gave them a fresh, bright finish, and they worked beautifully as a light starter. The Tigania from Macedonia was another highlight, with tender pork, caramelised onions and thyme giving it a homely, comforting flavour. For something richer, the Moschari sto Fourno is the dish to choose: slow-cooked beef, aubergine and feta in a deeply satisfying combination.
