After lunch on our journey to Exeter, we made our way to the Otter Valley Dairy and Field Kitchen in search of something sweet — and it didn’t disappoint. What began in 2010 as a humble summerhouse ice cream stall has evolved into a full-fledged Field Kitchen and gelato destination. Inspired by the artistry of Italian gelato masters, the family travelled abroad to learn their craft, returning with the know-how to create small-batch ice cream using traditional techniques — a method they still use today.
We visited on a dry, mild day, and while we didn’t go inside the restaurant itself (dogs aren’t allowed indoors) as we had Ollie with us, the outdoor area was perfect for relaxing with a cone in hand. There were families, couples, and plenty of energetic children enjoying the open space. Dogs lounged in the sun near their owners, and laughter drifted across the field. It’s rare to find a place that blends artisan food, family-friendly charm, and panoramic views so effortlessly — and the Otter Valley Field Kitchen does just that.
